In celebration of International Human Resources Day, we asked a few human resources personnel what they love most about HR and their minor favourite thing about HR.

Here is what some of them have to say:

Nita

What do you love about human resources?

I love being an HR because I create and see a process through implementation. It’s like Wike building a flyover and commissioning it.

What do you dislike about human resources?

Hate… I won’t say hate, but the stressful part of HR is you’re trying to make a good change, which can be perceived as evil quickly

Seun

What do you love about human resources?

What I find most fulfilling about HR is the opportunity to help create a positive work environment and support employees in reaching their full potential. Witnessing individuals thrive and contribute to the organisation’s success is a rewarding journey.

What do you dislike about human resources?

On the other hand, there are challenges in HR. Sometimes, we can get overwhelmed with administrative tasks and compliance issues, distracting us from focusing on more strategic initiatives. Dealing with conflicts or difficult situations can be emotionally draining. And navigating the dynamics of different generations, especially in an organisation where most of the staff are Gen Z, can be quite a task.

What do you love about human resources?

What I love about HR is the opportunity to interact with a lot of people. As a people person, this is very nice.

What do you dislike about human resources?

I dislike the fact that most HR is the company’s lapdog. Who prioritises only the organisation’s interests

What do you love about human resources?

What I find most impactful about working in HR is the opportunity to provide top-notch service. Whether managing personnel, fostering relationships between employees and employers, or effectively utilising human capital within the organisation, HR can make a difference.

What do you dislike about human resources?

One aspect of HR that can be challenging is the perception that everything is the HR department’s fault, leading to undue blame. Additionally, there’s often a stereotype that HR professionals must be more approachable or are solely aligned with management interests. Moreover, the pressure on HR can sometimes be overwhelming due to our responsibilities.

What do you love about human resources?

I love the opportunity to work with people and positively impact their careers and well-being. I also value the opportunity to work closely with leadership and influence organizational decisions.

What do you dislike about human resources?

I dislike dealing with conflict or difficult situations, such as mediating disputes or terminating employees. I also dislike the administrative tasks and paperwork that come with HR work.

The stereotype that HR professionals are bad people is unfair and inaccurate. HR is crucial; teams often drive a company’s success. They create a positive and productive work environment for employees and take on the responsibility when policies don’t go as planned.
