In a bold move aimed at uplifting workers’ welfare, Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has approved a new minimum wage of N75,000 for state workers. The announcement came during his May Day address at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on Thursday, May 1, 2025.
Governor Okpebholo said the wage increase — up from the previous N70,000 — underscores his administration’s dedication to improving the standard of living for workers across Edo State.
Today, I am proud to announce that our administration has approved a new minimum wage of N75,000 per month for all Edo workers,” he said. “It’s our way of saying thank you, Edo workers. We believe this makes a real difference, and we count on your dedication to a better Edo.
The governor also used the occasion to highlight key achievements since assuming office. These include the conversion of over 1,000 casual workers to permanent staff and the recruitment of 500 teachers. Additionally, he confirmed that over 3,000 casual teachers are currently undergoing regularisation.
In the healthcare sector, Okpebholo revealed the approval of 450 new jobs for both clinical and non-clinical staff across state hospitals. He also confirmed the transition of 126 contract workers at the Edo State Specialist Hospital to permanent employment. Notably, health insurance coverage has now been extended to retirees, further demonstrating the administration’s commitment to worker welfare beyond active service.
Reacting to the announcements, Acting Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Edo Chapter, Comrade Bernard Egwekhide, praised the state government’s initiatives. He described the wage increase and other welfare efforts as “a welcome relief” for workers and pensioners alike.
Egwekhide also noted the ongoing collaboration between the Edo State Government and the Federal Government, especially in addressing critical infrastructure issues throughout the state.
The wage increase is expected to take effect immediately.
